The Centre for Basic Space Science (CBSS) is an activity Centre of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) located at the campus of University of Nigeria, Nsukka with an Observatory Complex at Eburumiri. It is saddled with the mandate to development skills and knowledge of researchers through training, and enhance international collaboration with other organizations with similar interests within and outside Nigeria. The research focus of CBSS are in Optical, Radio, Solar astronomy etc. It is also involved in planetary science researches such as meteorite studies, SETIs, evolutionary panspermia etc. The Centre is also very active in the design, fabrication and patenting of space technology instruments and products, and appropriate hardware and software. Above all CBSS has qualified manpower in these various areas of research. As a Centre of Excellence, CBSS host two IAU offices, the West African Regional Office of astronomy for Development (WAROAD) which oversees Astronomy for Development Activities in West Africa and Office of Astronomy for Outreach which coordinates astronomy outreach in Nigeria.

In 2017 CBSS was able to secure a grant from for sponsorship of at least 4 postgraduate students each year. The recipient of the grants must be postgraduate students from studying space science related courses from sub-Saharan Africa.  The CBSS, as part of NASRDA, is pioneering planetary science and astronomy research in Nigeria especially in star formation and galactic evolution. The centre provides training in radio astronomy and astrophysics, astronomy instrumentation and, recently, has embarked on a major program for the study of meteorites with developing interests in space defence. The CBSS as of 2017 was able to secure a grant, Chukwuma Cosmas Ezenma-CBSS research grant for Nigerian students in space science and astronomy, for sponsorship of at least 4 postgraduate students each year. The recipient of the grants must be postgraduate students studying space science related courses from sub-Saharan Africa. The worth of the grant is about N 500,000.00 each.

Role in the project
WP6: CBSS, as part of NASDRA, will play an important role in the WP6 providing important insights on the advancement of the space programme in Nigeria.

WP7: CBSS team will be also crucial in the WP7 as one of the institute with broader outreach programme in the country.
